Berea & Lexington, Kentucky

First frost of the trip. Sunny & Clear morning. We drove into Berea, Kentucky from our KOA and had breakfast with Rick & D at the Boonesboro Hotel. This is Daniel Boone country…and civil war history. WE drove out to the site of the Battle of Richmond which was decidedly a very big victory for the Southern Conferate Forces. The Visitors centre was closed for Veterans Day but we got a good sense of the battle and the area.

Rick & D departed for home and we headed for Lexington, Kentucky. Beautiful white fenced horse racing farms and beautiful scenery. We stopped at the Visitors Centre, Kenneland Race Course, did a tour of the local farms and visited Thoroughbred Park.

Very large horse racing and breeding area, with Queen Elizabeth II keeping some of her horses on Lane’s End Farm. This 2000 acre farm has included 1987 Horse of the year and Kentucky Derby Winner “Spend a buck “, 1988 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner horse of the year “Alysheba” , 1988 Belmont winner “Bet Twice, and the 2007, 2008 Horse of the year “Curlin”. These horses are valued in multi-millions. One horse in the area sold recently for $13.1 million.

Lexington is where Smuckers Company makes JIF peanut butter.

On the way home we stopped at Papaleno’s Pizza.
